What inspires us at Abbey Timber is when we get to know about exciting projects using our wood! One of those projects is Bridgend Inspiring Growth, a community owned enterprise situated amongst three of the most deprived housing estates in Edinburgh.
We supplied visually graded Douglas fir framing timbers and larch cladding for their Eco Bothy Build. It recently won the Voluntary Arts Epic National Award for Scotland and was also highly commended in their Celebrating Diversity Award. Architect is Belford based Duncan Roberts who draws on many years experience of supporting community groups and charities with timber-framed self-builds that are both affordable and sustainable.
The Bothy Build is a volunteer led project teaching carpentry skills, straw bale building and natural building techniques to volunteers from all walks of life. Over 70 local children were also involved, helping design the accessible outdoor play area.
The Eco-Bothy will be used primarily as a family and children’s space, for community activities, with an emphasis on environmental and outdoor education, storytelling and arts performances.
